Wat Phu Khao Noi (Island Viewpoint Temple)
Koh Phangan's oldest hilltop temple with a 360-degree panorama over the Gulf of Thailand, Koh Samui, and the island's jungle interior. Best at sunrise or golden hour, with monks in residence and a sacred Buddha footprint shrine at the summit.

About this Place
Wat Phu Khao Noi occupies Koh Phangan's central hilltop and offers one of the finest panoramic views on the island — a sweeping 360-degree outlook taking in the Gulf of Thailand, the unmistakable silhouette of Koh Samui across the water, the neighbouring peaks of Koh Tao on the clearest days, and the rolling jungle interior of Koh Phangan itself. The temple is reputedly one of the oldest on the island and remains an active place of Buddhist worship, with monks in residence who conduct morning chanting sessions. The summit is accessible by a steep but paved road suitable for motorbike or songthaew, and on foot for those who prefer the walk. At the highest point, a revered Buddha footprint shrine sits in a small pavilion surrounded by offerings. A large seated Buddha further down the slope faces out over the sea in silent contemplation. The views are best at sunrise — arrive before six in the morning to catch the light breaking over the Gulf before the heat builds — or at golden hour in the late afternoon. Respectful dress covering shoulders and knees is required throughout the grounds. Combine with a motorbike circuit of the island interior to appreciate how dramatically different Koh Phangan looks away from its famous beaches.
