About Sukhothai

Sukhothai – Overview

Sukhothai is widely regarded among YouTube creators as one of the most photogenic yet underrated filming locations in Thailand. Founded in 1238 as the first capital of the Thai kingdom, this ancient city gave birth to the Thai alphabet created by King Ramkhamhaeng, classical art forms, and the foundations of Thai governance. Today, its sprawling UNESCO World Heritage Historical Park, designated in 1991, offers a serene atmosphere that stands in stark contrast to the crowded temples of Bangkok, making it a favorite for creators who value contemplative, visually rich content.

Sukhothai – Nature & Sightseeing

The Sukhothai Historical Park covers 70 square kilometers across five zones with over 190 temple ruins. The central zone entry costs 100 Baht for foreigners, with separate 100 Baht tickets for the north, south, east, and west zones, or a multi-zone pass available. Wat Mahathat, the central temple with its lotus-bud columns and grand seated Buddha flanked by 200 smaller chedis, serves as the heart of the complex and a perennial favorite for video thumbnails. Wat Si Chum houses an enormous 15-meter-high Buddha image peering through a narrow slit in the surrounding mondop walls, creating dramatic framing opportunities that cinematographers treasure. Wat Sa Si sits on an island in the middle of a lotus pond, providing serene reflections at dawn. At sunrise and sunset, warm light bathes the ancient sandstone and laterite in golden hues, transforming any footage into cinematic content.

Sukhothai – Local Life

Bicycle rental is the best way to explore the park at 30 Baht per day from numerous shops near the entrance, and many creators film their leisurely rides past lotus ponds, ancient banyan trees, and grazing water buffalo. Electric tram tours run through the central zone at 60 Baht. The Ramkhamhaeng National Museum (150 Baht entry) near the park entrance displays artifacts from the Sukhothai period including bronze Buddha images, ceramics, and inscriptions that provide essential historical context for documentary content.
