About Samut Prakan

Samut Prakan – Overview

Samut Prakan, a province of roughly 1.9 million people, sits at the southern edge of Bangkok where the mighty Chao Phraya River empties into the Gulf of Thailand. Despite being part of the greater Bangkok metropolitan area and reachable via BTS Skytrain extension to Kheha Station (Sukhumvit Line, 59 Baht from central Bangkok), this province maintains a distinct character shaped by its network of canals, mangrove forests, and river islands that have resisted the relentless urban sprawl of the capital.

Samut Prakan – Nature & Sightseeing

The province's star attraction is the Ancient City (Muang Boran), one of the world's largest open-air museums at 320 hectares (entry 700 Baht for foreigners, 350 Baht for Thais). Spread across a vast park shaped like the map of Thailand, it contains over 116 meticulously crafted replicas of the country's most significant temples, palaces, and monuments, many recreated at full scale. Bicycle rental inside the park costs 50 Baht, or electric carts at 350 Baht per hour. The park requires a full day to explore properly and delivers dozens of unique filming locations across every architectural style in Thai history.

Samut Prakan – Local Life

The Erawan Museum (400 Baht entry) is equally striking, featuring a massive 29-meter-tall three-headed bronze elephant standing atop an ornate building. Inside, three floors represent the underworld, earth, and heaven, housing a remarkable collection of antiquities, religious artifacts, and stained glass that creates extraordinary visual content. The spiral staircase inside the elephant's body and the starfield ceiling of the top floor are particularly photogenic.
