About Nakhon Ratchasima

Nakhon Ratchasima – Overview

Nakhon Ratchasima, affectionately known as Korat by locals and travelers alike, stands as Thailand's largest province at over 20,000 square kilometers and the undisputed gateway to the vast Isan plateau of the northeast. With a metro area population of around 820,000, Korat is Thailand's third-largest city after Bangkok and Chiang Mai. The city itself is a thriving urban center where modern shopping malls like Terminal 21, complete with its Skydeck observation tower at 110 meters, sit alongside ancient city walls. The iconic Thao Suranari Monument honors the brave woman who defended the city against Lao invaders in 1826 and is the center of the annual Thao Suranari Festival, a ten-day celebration in late March to early April featuring historical reenactments, parades, and concerts.

Nakhon Ratchasima – Nature & Sightseeing

The province's crown jewel is Khao Yai National Park, Thailand's oldest national park established in 1962 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Entry costs 400 Baht for foreign adults. The park covers 2,168 square kilometers of intact monsoon forest, home to over 300 wild elephants, 320 bird species, and 3,000 plant species. Haew Suwat Waterfall, featured in the film The Beach, and Haew Narok, with its dramatic 150-meter drop, are the standout natural attractions. The night safari is a unique content opportunity, running in two slots from 7 to 8 PM and 8 to 9 PM at 600 Baht per vehicle or 2,500 Baht per person for a guided tour. Civets, porcupines, slow lorises, owls, and occasionally leopard cats emerge along the forest roads, creating footage that captivates wildlife audiences.

Nakhon Ratchasima – Local Life

Phimai Historical Park, 60 kilometers northeast of the city at 100 Baht entry, houses a magnificent 11th to 12th-century Khmer temple built from white sandstone. Its main prang is considered a predecessor to Angkor Wat, connected by an ancient Khmer highway. The Phimai National Museum at 100 Baht displays intricate lintel fragments and sandstone sculptures. Just three kilometers from the park, the Sai Ngam Great Banyan Tree spreads its aerial roots across 2,300 square meters, creating a surreal canopy that delivers unique visual content. The Jim Thompson Farm, open seasonally from December to February at 200 Baht, covers 600 hectares with flower fields, silk production demonstrations, and agricultural exhibits. PB Valley Khao Yai Winery, Thailand's oldest winery, offers vineyard tours and wine tastings from 300 Baht, providing a surprising angle for content creators.
