Red Lotus Lake (Talay Bua Daeng)
A lake carpeted in millions of red lotus flowers at dawn — arrive at sunrise by longtail boat for one of Thailand's most magical natural spectacles.

About this Place
Red Lotus Lake (Talay Bua Daeng) in Nong Han swamp, 45km from Udon Thani city, is one of Thailand's most magical natural spectacles — a vast natural lake covered in millions of blooming red lotus flowers, best witnessed at dawn from a longtail boat as the morning mist lifts and the pink-red carpet extends unbroken to the horizon. The lotus blooms at peak saturation December–February, with the lake surface appearing entirely covered. Boats carry visitors slowly through narrow channels in the lotus field, close enough to touch the flowers and observe the insects and birds feeding among them. The surrounding wetland is rich with bird life including painted storks, pheasant-tailed jacanas, purple herons, and kingfishers. Boats depart from the village of Ban Dung at first light, from approximately 06:00. Hiring a longtail boat costs around 600 THB for a 45-minute circuit. Arrive before 09:00 as the lotus flowers begin closing in the late morning heat. Combine with a visit to Ban Chiang UNESCO site (1 hour drive). Peak bloom is December–January. One of Thailand's most photographed natural phenomena.
