Nong Prajak Reservoir is the green heart of Udon Thani city — a large urban lake surrounded by well-maintained jogging paths, dedicated cycling tracks, food vendor areas, and open parkland where the city's residents gather at dawn for exercise and in the evenings for street food and socialising. The lakeside food court activates from late afternoon with Isaan specialties: grilled chicken (gai yang), papaya salad (som tam), laab (spiced minced meat salad), and fresh-squeezed fruit juices. The park hosts community events, bicycle rental stations, and paddleboat rides on the lake itself. Udon Thani has a significant expat community with roots stretching back to the Vietnam War era when a USAF base operated nearby — this history has given the city a cosmopolitan character unusual for Isaan. The park and surrounding evening markets reflect the city's layered identity. For travellers in transit towards the Laos border or continuing the Isaan circuit north, Nong Prajak provides a genuinely pleasant few hours in a real working Thai city.
