About Railay

Railay – Overview

Railay, also spelled Rai Leh, is one of Southern Thailand's most iconic destinations and a place that leaves even seasoned travelers speechless. The peninsula is cut off from the mainland by sheer limestone cliffs and accessible only by longtail boat, giving it a sense of seclusion that is increasingly rare along the otherwise well-developed Andaman coast. The crossing from Ao Nang takes 15 minutes and costs 100 Baht, while from Krabi Town it is a 45-minute ride for 150 Baht. Despite its proximity to touristy Ao Nang, Railay feels like a world apart.

Railay – Nature & Sightseeing

The peninsula divides into four main beaches, each with its own distinct character. Railay West, where boats from Ao Nang arrive, offers a wide sandy beach with views of the offshore islands and is the liveliest part of the peninsula with bars, restaurants and accommodations. Railay East, on the opposite side, is lined with mangroves and less suited to swimming, but quieter and cheaper: bungalows from 600 Baht compared to 1,500 Baht on the west side. Phra Nang Beach at the southern tip is the star, regularly listed among the world's top 10 most beautiful beaches, with its Princess Cave and turquoise water that glows almost unnaturally in sunlight. Tonsai Beach to the north is the domain of climbers and backpackers, with basic huts from 400 Baht and a laid-back hippie atmosphere.

Railay – Local Life

Rock climbing is Railay's signature activity and the reason adventure vloggers travel here from around the globe. Over 700 marked routes on the limestone cliffs make the peninsula one of Asia's premier climbing destinations. Difficulty grades range from 5a for beginners to 8b+ for professionals. Half-day beginner courses start at 1,200 Baht and include equipment, belaying and an experienced guide. Full-day tours from 2,000 Baht tackle more demanding multi-pitch routes. Sunset at the One-Two-Three Wall, overlooking the Andaman Sea, delivers footage that can generate millions of views on YouTube. Deep water soloing, climbing above deep water without ropes, is another specialty that produces spectacular video content.
