About this Place
The Naga Fireballs are a mysterious natural phenomenon appearing each year at the end of Buddhist Lent (October) on the Mekong near Nong Khai and Phon Phisai. Pink-red orbs of light silently rise from the river and disappear into the night. Locals believe the nagas (mythical serpents) beneath the river shoot the fireballs. The phenomenon remains scientifically unexplained and draws thousands of spectators.
