Prasat Ta Muen Thom
Remote Khmer border sanctuaries on the Cambodia frontier — Ta Muen Thom's atmospheric jungle ruins on the ancient royal road see virtually no tourists.

About this Place
Prasat Ta Muen Thom is a remote Khmer sanctuary complex on the Thai-Cambodian border, rarely visited but remarkable for its isolation and atmospheric jungle setting. The three sanctuaries sit on a Dongrak mountain ridge pass, historically part of the royal Khmer road linking Angkor to Phimai. Ta Muen Thom (the main sanctuary) is a 10th–11th century complex with elaborate doorway carvings in the Baphuon style. The adjacent Prasat Ta Muen Tok was a dharmasala — a rest house for pilgrims on the ancient royal road — while the smaller Prasat Ta Muen served as a hospital chapel. The dramatic mountain border setting, partial jungle reclamation of the ruins, and near-total absence of other visitors create an Indiana Jones atmosphere impossible to find at more-developed sites. A border crossing point to Cambodia is nearby but is not regularly open for foreign tourists. Access requires a private vehicle from Surin or Buriram city (approximately 90 minutes). Bring your own water, food, and sun protection as there is no visitor infrastructure at the site. A genuinely rewarding off-grid adventure for serious history and archaeology enthusiasts willing to make the effort.
