Prasat Prang Ku

Buriram $ 4.3

A free and pristine 12th-century Khmer hospital chapel β€” one of Jayavarman VII's 102 royal road sanctuaries, with original lintels and a lotus-filled moat.

About this Place

Prasat Prang Ku is a 12th-century Khmer hospital chapel located in Si Sa Ket province near the Buriram border, one of 102 identical hospital sanctuaries built along Khmer royal roads by King Jayavarman VII to provide medical care for travellers and pilgrims crossing his empire. The three laterite and sandstone prasat towers retain fine carved lintels with Hindu and Buddhist motifs reflecting the transitional religious period of the late Khmer empire under Jayavarman VII's Buddhist patronage. The surrounding moat and sacred pond are partially intact. Unique among the Isaan Khmer temples, the lotus-filled moat and mature shade trees create a serene, meditative setting rarely disturbed by other visitors β€” you may have the entire site to yourself. The site is free to enter and entirely un-commercialised with no ticket booths or souvenir vendors. Accessible from Si Sa Ket city in around 30 minutes, or as a worthwhile detour between Buriram and Ubon Ratchathani on the southeastern Khmer temple circuit. An ideal stop for those who want to experience a genuine Khmer site without infrastructure or crowds.
