Mueang Tam Sanctuary (Prasat Hin Mueang Tam)

Buriram $ 4.5

A 10th-century Khmer temple with four lotus ponds perfectly mirroring its towers — Mueang Tam is Buriram's intimate, less-visited counterpart to Phanom Rung.

About this Place

Prasat Hin Mueang Tam (Sanctuary of the Lower City) is a 10th–11th century Khmer temple located 8km downhill from Phanom Rung, making the two sites a natural combined visit. Where Phanom Rung has dramatic elevation and grand processional approach, Mueang Tam is lower and more intimate — four L-shaped ponds frame the five prasat towers in a water reflection composition unmatched in Thai Khmer architecture. The sandstone towers show the early Baphuon style of Khmer art, and the central sanctuary contains fine lintels depicting the Hindu trinity of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. Far fewer visitors than Phanom Rung despite comparable artistry and better-preserved surrounding ponds. The lotus-filled ponds attract egrets and kingfishers in the morning light. Entry is 100 THB for foreign visitors. Hire a motorbike from Prakhon Chai town or take a songthaew to visit both sites in a day trip from Buriram city. Less commercially developed than Phanom Rung — bring water and snacks. The combination of water reflections, intact prasat towers, and near-total quiet makes Mueang Tam one of Isaan's most rewarding Khmer experiences.
