Phimai Historical Park

Thailand's finest and oldest Khmer complex — white sandstone towers predating Angkor Wat, connected by ancient royal road and still remarkably intact.

About this Place

Phimai is Thailand's most significant and best-preserved Khmer temple complex, predating even Angkor Wat — some scholars believe Phimai directly influenced the great Cambodian complex's design. Built between the 11th–12th centuries, the white sandstone and laterite complex sits at the town centre and was connected to Angkor by the ancient Khmer royal road running straight for over 200km. The central prasat (tower) reaches 28 metres in near-perfect preservation. The carvings on the lintels and pediments are exceptional quality, depicting scenes from the Ramayana, Hindu deities, and the Life of the Buddha. The outer gallery walls are substantially intact, enclosing a large sacred compound. The entire complex is set on an island surrounded by the convergence of two rivers — the original urban planning of the ancient city is still clearly visible. Phimai town has comfortable guesthouses and good restaurants. The nearby Sai Ngam — a 350-year-old banyan tree covering over one rai of ground, one of Southeast Asia's largest — is worth combining into your visit. Located 60km northeast of Korat city.
