Ban Prasat Archaeological Site

A 3,500-year-old Bronze Age village with open excavation pits — see original human remains in situ and learn about prehistoric rice cultivation on the Korat Plateau.

About this Place

Ban Prasat is one of Thailand's most important prehistoric archaeological sites, a 3,500-year-old Bronze Age village near Phimai that was continuously inhabited through to the early historic period. Three excavation pits remain open to public viewing — a rare opportunity in Thailand to see original human remains in situ alongside bronze tools, pottery vessels, and rice husks confirming ancient rice cultivation on the Khorat Plateau. The small but well-curated on-site museum presents findings from three dig phases conducted by the Thai Fine Arts Department and provides clear context for the Bronze Age inhabitants who lived here a millennium and a half before Christ. The surrounding modern village has a living crafts tradition and can be explored comfortably on foot. Ban Prasat reveals that the Khorat Plateau was a sophisticated inhabited landscape thousands of years before the Khmer built their great temples. Combine with Phimai Historical Park (30km away) for a powerful single-day journey from 3,500-year-old Bronze Age civilisation to 12th-century Khmer artistry.
