Doi Tung Royal Villa & Mae Fah Luang Garden
The late Princess Mother's mountain villa at 1,200m — royal gardens, sustainable development legacy, and cool highland scenery in northern Chiang Rai.

About this Place
Doi Tung Royal Villa was the summer residence of the late Princess Mother (mother of King Bhumibol) who spearheaded the Royal Project to replace opium cultivation in the Golden Triangle with sustainable agriculture. The two-story teak wood villa perched at 1,200m elevation reflects Swiss chalet influences combined with local Lanna style, incorporating timber from the original palace grounds. The Mae Fah Luang Garden surrounding the villa is renowned for its roses, hydrangeas, and topiary across 8 hectares of manicured gardens. The broader Doi Tung Development Project transformed highland villages and demonstrates an inspiring model of royal-led sustainable development. Café on site uses produce from the project's farms. Cool mountain air year-round. Combine with the nearby Doi Tung Temple (Wat Phra That Doi Tung) for impressive views and twin chedi.
