Introduction
Udon Thani's position at the heart of Isaan makes it one of the best bases in Northeast Thailand for day trip exploration. Within a two-hour radius, the landscape shifts from the flat agricultural plains of the Udon Thani basin to the dramatic sandstone plateaus of Phu Phra Bat, the languid Mekong River border towns, and the mystical sculpture parks of Nong Khai. This is a part of Thailand where the history is deeper, the distances are honest, and the rewards go to travellers willing to move beyond the familiar. Whether you want ancient rock art, surrealist religious sculpture, a crossing to Laos, or a plateau hike with views to the horizon, the day trip options from Udon Thani are genuinely exceptional.
Overview
Phu Phra Bat Historical Park, located approximately 70 kilometres north of Udon Thani in Ban Phue District, is one of the most visually extraordinary heritage sites in Thailand and remains surprisingly little-known outside specialist circles. The park protects a plateau landscape of bizarre mushroom-shaped sandstone formations — pillars and boulders balanced on narrow pedestals, eroded over millions of years into shapes that early inhabitants interpreted as the work of supernatural forces. Within and around these formations, prehistoric inhabitants painted rock art on the sheltered surfaces; Buddhist monks and rulers of subsequent eras built shrines and temples into the natural alcoves and overhangs; and the whole accumulation of geology, prehistory, and religious history has been left largely undisturbed in a park of haunting atmosphere. Entry is 100 THB and the park can be explored on a 3–5 kilometre walking circuit.
Nong Khai, one hour north of Udon Thani on the Mekong River, is the most visited day trip target from the city and deservedly so. The town sits directly on the Mekong with Laos's capital Vientiane visible across the river — the Friendship Bridge crossing to Vientiane makes this the most heavily-used overland border crossing between Thailand and Laos. Nong Khai has a relaxed, riverside character entirely unlike most Thai towns; backpackers use it as a Laos gateway, retirees settle on the river, and Buddhist pilgrims come for the Luang Pho Phra Sai shrine. Sala Kaeo Ku — the bizarre sculpture park of concrete religious statuary created by the mystic Luang Pu Bunleua Sulilat — is Nong Khai's most unusual attraction: hundreds of larger-than-life Buddhist and Hindu figures in surrealist compositions that feel like the fever dream of an inspired eccentric. Entry 20 THB.
That Phanom, located in Nakhon Phanom Province about 150 kilometres southeast of Udon Thani, is the most revered Buddhist pilgrimage site in Isaan. The central attraction is a Lao-style chedi (stupa) that is believed to enshrine a relic of the Buddha's breastbone, and Thai and Lao Buddhists travel from across the region to pay respect. The surrounding town is quiet and devoted to the shrine, with excellent food and a peaceful atmosphere. The drive from Udon Thani via Highway 22 passes through characteristic Isaan agricultural landscapes and takes about 2.5–3 hours each way.
Loei Province's Phu Kradueng National Park, about 130 kilometres southwest of Udon Thani, is a major day trip and overnight target for Thai domestic tourists: a high sandstone plateau reached by a demanding 8.5-kilometre hike, with meadows of grass and pine forest at the summit and extraordinary sunset views. The park is closed during the rainy season (July–September) when the trail becomes dangerous. Day trips to Phu Kradueng involve a very early start, significant physical exertion, and are most rewarding as an overnight trip rather than a return day trip.
For local transport, the most practical option for all these destinations is hiring a private driver from Udon Thani — most guesthouses and hotels can arrange this, and a full-day driver costs approximately 1,500–2,500 THB including fuel and tolls. Songthaews and local buses connect to Nong Khai reliably (90–120 minutes, 80–100 THB), but reaching Phu Phra Bat by public transport requires multiple changes and is impractical for a day trip.

November through February is the best season for all day trips from Udon Thani — cool, dry weather makes outdoor sites like Phu Phra Bat and Phu Kradueng comfortable and the driving enjoyable. Phu Kradueng is closed July–September during the rainy season. Phu Phra Bat and Nong Khai are year-round destinations, though the wet season months of June–October can make the Phu Phra Bat walking circuits muddy. That Phanom is best visited during the That Phanom Festival in late January–February, when it is one of the largest Buddhist gatherings in Isaan, though the crowds are substantial.

Tips
Book a private driver the day before rather than organising on the morning of departure — reliable English-speaking drivers are in demand and the best ones book up. For Phu Phra Bat, starting before 9am avoids the midday heat on the walking circuit and gives you the park largely to yourself during the week. The Sala Kaeo Ku sculpture park in Nong Khai is best photographed in the golden hour — arrive in the late afternoon. If planning a Laos crossing from Nong Khai, bring your passport and check current visa requirements as the process changes periodically. Phu Kradueng is strongly recommended as an overnight trip rather than a day return — the 17-kilometre round trip hike is exhausting and the sunset from the plateau is extraordinary.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is special about Phu Phra Bat Historical Park?
Phu Phra Bat is a sandstone plateau in Udon Thani Province where millions of years of erosion have produced a landscape of extraordinary natural rock formations — pillars, mushroom shapes, and balanced boulders — that early inhabitants found spiritually significant. On and around these formations you can find prehistoric rock paintings, ancient Buddhist boundary stones, and small shrines built into natural rock overhangs, creating a layered archaeological landscape that spans from prehistoric to historical times. The park is remarkably well preserved and receives relatively few visitors compared to its quality. The walking circuit through the formations takes 2–3 hours and covers perhaps the most distinctive landscape in Northeast Thailand.
What is Sala Kaeo Ku in Nong Khai?
Sala Kaeo Ku (also spelled Wat Khaek) is one of the most unusual attractions in Thailand — a sculpture park created by the mystic monk Luang Pu Bunleua Sulilat, filled with hundreds of enormous concrete statues depicting Buddhist and Hindu figures in fantastical, sometimes surreal compositions. Giant multi-headed snakes coil around seated Buddhas, enormous hands emerge from the earth, and a vast pumpkin-shaped structure contains multiple floors of smaller religious figures. The park was created from the 1970s onward and reflects a highly personal religious vision that blends Thai and Lao spiritual traditions with the creator's individual mythology. Entry is 20 THB and the park is open daily. It is unlike anything else in Thailand.
Can I cross to Laos from Nong Khai on a day trip?
Yes — Nong Khai is connected to Vientiane, Laos's capital, by the Friendship Bridge, and this is one of the most practical border crossings in the region. The crossing is open daily, and Laos visas on arrival are available for most nationalities for approximately USD 35–50 depending on your passport. From the border it is a short tuk-tuk or taxi ride into central Vientiane. A day trip to Vientiane is feasible — the main attractions like Patuxay Monument, Pha That Luang, and the Night Market are easily covered in a day. Check the current border hours and visa requirements before planning, as they occasionally change. Bring your passport, additional passport photos, and sufficient USD cash for the visa fee.
How difficult is the hike up Phu Kradueng?
The main trail up Phu Kradueng to the plateau is 8.5 kilometres one way, with a significant elevation gain of approximately 800 metres. It is classified as a moderate to challenging hike — well within the capability of reasonably fit adults, but not trivial. The trail surface is stone-paved in most places and well maintained, but steep sections require effort. The ascent typically takes 3–5 hours at a comfortable pace. Porters are available at the trailhead to carry supplies for a negotiated fee of 400–600 THB, which is worth considering for an overnight trip. The descent on the return takes 2–3 hours. As a day trip from Udon Thani (130 km away), the logistics are extremely tight — most visitors spend at least one night on the plateau.
What is That Phanom and why is it important?
That Phanom is the most sacred Buddhist site in Isaan — a Lao-style stupa (chedi) in the small town of That Phanom in Nakhon Phanom Province, believed to enshrine a relic of the Buddha's breastbone. The stupa's elegant tapering spire, white and gold against the Mekong river plain, has been rebuilt and renovated multiple times over its history — the existing structure largely dates to the 19th century though the site's sacredness extends over a millennium. Thai and Lao Buddhists make pilgrimages here year-round, and the annual That Phanom Festival (held in late January or February on the full moon of the third lunar month) draws hundreds of thousands of devotees over a ten-day period, making it one of the largest Buddhist gatherings in Southeast Asia.
