Pai Canyon (Kong Lan)
Narrow knife-edge ridges above a miniature canyon — Pai's most dramatic natural viewpoint turns spectacular amber at sunset, 8km south of town.

About this Place
Pai Canyon (known locally as Kong Lan) is one of northern Thailand's most dramatic natural formations — narrow ridges of compacted clay and earth carved by erosion into a miniature Grand Canyon. The main viewpoint, 8km south of Pai town, offers a short walking trail along knife-edge ridges with steep drops on both sides. The paths are narrow (some 30cm wide) and have no railings, making the canyon genuinely thrilling. Sunset from the canyon is spectacular — the clay ridges turn deep amber and the Pai valley spreads below in golden light. Arrive 30–45 minutes before sunset for the best colours. The canyon is free, with a small parking area and food vendor. In rainy season (Jun–Oct) the clay paths can be slippery — wear appropriate footwear. Combine with a motorbike ride around the Pai loop.
