Laem Ngop Pier & Coastal Village

Trat $ 4.1

The gateway pier village to Koh Chang and the Trat islands — a fishing harbour with a WWII naval monument and the last seafood meal at reasonable prices before the islands.

About this Place

Laem Ngop is the main ferry departure point for Koh Chang and other Trat islands — a small fishing village and pier complex on the Gulf coast mainland. While primarily a transit point, Laem Ngop has a pleasant local character worth a brief exploration. The village fishing harbour at dawn is active with wooden boats unloading catches. A naval monument commemorates the 1941 Battle of Koh Chang — Thailand's only major WWII naval engagement, where Vichy French naval forces defeated the smaller Royal Thai Navy. The coastal road between Trat city and Laem Ngop (20km) passes mangrove forests, shrimp farms, and coconut groves. A small market near the pier serves fresh seafood at excellent prices. The ferry crossing to Koh Chang (30 min) offers good views of the Trat archipelago from the deck. Arrive 30 minutes before departure to purchase tickets and find good deck positions.
