About Phayao
Phayao lies in the upper reaches of northern Thailand, roughly 90 kilometers east of Chiang Rai and 260 kilometers northeast of Chiang Mai. The province was historically part of the ancient Phayao Kingdom, one of three allied Tai states — alongside Lanna and Sukhothai — that formed a pact in 1287 to resist Mongol expansion. Today, Phayao is one of Thailand's least-visited provinces by foreign tourists, yet it possesses a quiet lakeside charm and genuine local culture that makes it deeply rewarding for those who make the detour. The population of around 480,000 lives predominantly from rice farming, fishing, and small-scale commerce, creating an atmosphere of unhurried rural tranquility.
The defining feature of Phayao is Kwan Phayao, a vast freshwater lake covering approximately 18 square kilometers that sits right at the edge of the provincial capital. The lake was created in 1941 when the Ing River was dammed for irrigation, and it has since become the spiritual and social heart of the community. At dawn, local fishermen paddle wooden boats across the glassy surface, casting nets for tilapia and walking catfish, while joggers and cyclists trace the lakeside promenade. The most remarkable sight lies beneath the water: Wat Tilok Aram, a 500-year-old temple that was submerged when the lake was formed. Its ruins are visible during the dry season when water levels drop, and the annual Wat Tilok Aram merit-making ceremony in April draws thousands of devotees who take boats out to offer prayers above the sunken chedi.
Phayao's temple heritage extends well above the waterline. Wat Si Khom Kham, overlooking the lake, houses the largest Chiang Saen-era Buddha image in the Lanna region — Phra Chao Ton Luang, a seated figure over 16 meters tall that radiates calm authority. The temple grounds offer panoramic lake views and are especially beautiful at sunset when the water turns gold. North of the city, Wat Analayo Thipphayaram perches on a hilltop surrounded by forest and features a massive white seated Buddha, walking meditation paths, and views stretching across the Ing River valley. The temple is free to visit and is most atmospheric in the cool season from November to February when morning mist fills the valleys below.
