About Ao Nang

Ao Nang – Overview

Ao Nang sits nestled between towering limestone cliffs on Thailand's Andaman coast and serves as the primary tourist base in Krabi province. With a permanent population of around 6,000 that swells many times over during peak season, Ao Nang strikes the right balance between tourist infrastructure and direct access to some of the most spectacular natural scenery in Southeast Asia. The main beach stretches roughly 1.5 kilometers and is framed by the distinctive Khao Hang Nak limestone formation that defines the area's skyline.

Ao Nang – Nature & Sightseeing

Geographically, Ao Nang lies about 20 kilometers west of Krabi Town, connected by the well-maintained Route 4202. Its position at the edge of a wide bay flanked by karst formations makes it the ideal launching point for boat trips to the offshore islands. The longtail boat piers at the western end of the beach are the nerve center: boats depart for Railay (100 Baht, 15 minutes), the Hong Islands (1,200 Baht day tour), the Four Islands (800 Baht), and Koh Phi Phi (400 Baht one-way). The Speedboat Terminal handles longer routes to the Phi Phi Islands (650 Baht, 45 minutes) and Koh Lanta (500 Baht).

Ao Nang – Local Life

The main attraction of Ao Nang is the collection of beaches and islands reachable only by boat. Nopparat Thara Beach, part of the Hat Nopparat Thara - Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park, extends north of the main beach and at low tide reveals a walkable sandbar to an offshore island. Tub Island and Chicken Island are highlights of the Four Island Tour and provide thumbnail-worthy rock formations that practically guarantee high click-through rates on YouTube. For snorkelers, Poda Island offers clear water with visibility up to 15 meters and colorful coral gardens.
