Koh Phi Phi is an island group in the Andaman Sea that has become synonymous with tropical beauty. The two main islands, Phi Phi Don (inhabited) and Phi Phi Leh (uninhabited, home to Maya Bay), lie about 40 kilometers southeast of Phuket and 42 kilometers southwest of Krabi. The islands belong to the Hat Nopparat Thara - Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park, which theoretically protects the fragile ecosystems, though the sheer volume of visitors makes conservation an ongoing challenge.

Arriving at Phi Phi Don is itself a spectacle: the boat approaches the narrow isthmus between the two halves of the island, towered over by steep, jungle-covered limestone cliffs. There are no roads and no cars on the island. Everything is done on foot or by boat. Tonsai Bay on the south side is the commercial center with restaurants, dive shops, travel agencies and accommodations packed into a maze of narrow alleys. From the Tonsai Pier, a concrete lane leads into the heart of the village, where budget hostels (from 300 Baht for a dorm bed) sit alongside boutique hotels.

Maya Bay on Phi Phi Leh was catapulted to global fame by the Leonardo DiCaprio film The Beach in 2000 and had to close in 2018 for nearly four years due to environmental damage. Since reopening in 2022, visitor numbers are capped at 4,000 per day, swimming in the bay is prohibited, and the coral is recovering visibly. Entry costs 400 Baht (national park fee), and longtail boats from Phi Phi Don charge 1,500 Baht for a half-day tour that also includes Viking Cave and Pileh Lagoon. Pileh Lagoon, enclosed by vertical limestone walls with emerald-green water, is for many visitors even more impressive than Maya Bay itself.
