Phang Nga province covers 4,170 square kilometers along the Andaman coast between Phuket to the south and Ranong to the north. With a population of roughly 270,000, the province is sparsely settled, leaving vast stretches of landscape virtually untouched. The star attraction is Phang Nga Bay (Ao Phang Nga), a 400-square-kilometer inlet studded with over 40 limestone islands that rise dramatically from emerald-green waters. Since 1981 the bay has been protected as Ao Phang Nga National Park, with an entry fee of 300 Baht.

James Bond Island (Khao Phing Kan and Ko Tapu) is the bay's most iconic landmark, made world-famous by the 1974 film The Man with the Golden Gun. The needle-like Ko Tapu limestone formation rising from the water is a must-shoot for every Thailand vlogger. Tours to James Bond Island depart from Surakul Pier or Tha Dan Pier for 1,500-2,500 Baht as half-day longtail boat trips, including stops at the Koh Panyee floating fishing village. Koh Panyee itself, a stilted Muslim village of around 1,500 residents built over the water, is a fascinating cultural subject with its floating football pitch and traditional wooden houses.

Sea kayaking in Phang Nga Bay ranks among Southern Thailand's outstanding experiences. John Gray's Seacanoe, the region's eco-tourism pioneer operating since 1983, runs guided kayak tours that paddle through hongs, collapsed limestone caverns with hidden interior lagoons. These hongs are only accessible by kayak at certain tidal windows, giving the tours an exclusive feel. A full-day tour costs from 3,900 Baht including lunch and transfers. The mangrove forests along the coast offer dedicated kayak routes from 800 Baht, with sightings of fiddler crabs, mudskippers and occasionally langurs.
