About Nonthaburi

Nonthaburi – Overview

Nonthaburi is Bangkok's immediate northern neighbor and one of Thailand's smallest yet most densely populated provinces, a place that most tourists pass through without realizing it but that rewards vloggers and content creators with surprisingly rich material about traditional Thai river life existing in the shadow of a modern metropolis. Connected to Bangkok by the BTS and MRT system, Nonthaburi offers creators the rare ability to film deeply local content and be back in central Bangkok within 30 minutes.

Nonthaburi – Nature & Sightseeing

The province occupies both banks of the Chao Phraya River just north of Bangkok's official boundaries, though the urban fabric is essentially continuous. The western bank retains a remarkably green and rural character, with fruit orchards, vegetable gardens, and traditional canal communities surviving amid gradual development. The eastern bank is more urbanized, with the MRT Purple Line providing direct connections to Bangkok's transit network. Koh Kret, an island in the Chao Phraya formed by a canal shortcut dug during the Ayutthaya period, is the province's most famous attraction and a beloved weekend destination for Bangkok residents.

Nonthaburi – Local Life

Koh Kret is a car-free island community home to the Mon ethnic group, descendants of migrants from Myanmar who settled here centuries ago. The island is renowned for its distinctive unglazed terracotta pottery, crafted using traditional Mon techniques. Walking the narrow path that circles the island takes about two hours and passes through pottery workshops, small temples, traditional wooden houses on stilts, and food stalls selling Mon specialties. Weekend markets on Koh Kret are lively affairs with dozens of food vendors offering everything from grilled river prawns to coconut pancakes. The ferry to Koh Kret costs just 2 baht from Pak Kret pier, and the island has no admission fee.
