Lampang ลำปาง

Lampang is northern Thailand's best-kept secret — a charming province where horse-drawn carriages still clip-clop through quiet streets and centuries-old Lanna temples stand undisturbed by mass tourism. Known for its ceramics tradition, elephant conservation, and the sacred Wat Phra That Lampang Luang, Lampang offers an authentic slice of old Siam.

About Lampang

Lampang – Overview

Lampang occupies a strategic position in the upper Chao Phraya watershed, roughly 100 kilometers southeast of Chiang Mai along Highway 11. Despite being Thailand's third-largest northern province and home to over 750,000 residents, Lampang operates at a pace that feels almost meditative compared to its better-known neighbor. The city's symbol — the horse-drawn carriage — is not just a tourist gimmick but a genuine remnant of the logging era when Burmese teak merchants shaped the town's economy and architecture. A carriage ride through the old quarter costs around 200 to 300 THB and passes teak mansions, Chinese shophouses, and riverside temples that few guidebooks mention.

Lampang – Nature & Sightseeing

The crown jewel of Lampang province is Wat Phra That Lampang Luang, widely considered one of the finest examples of Lanna temple architecture in all of Thailand. The compound dates to the 15th century and is enclosed by massive laterite walls that once served as a fortified citadel. Inside, the open-sided wooden viharn houses a revered Chiang Saen-era Buddha image, and a small dark chapel produces a natural camera obscura effect — an inverted image of the main chedi projected onto a white cloth — that astonishes visitors. Entry is free, though a modest donation of 20 to 50 THB is customary. The temple sits about 18 kilometers southwest of the city center and is easily reached by songthaew for 30 THB.

Lampang – Local Life

Lampang's ceramics heritage runs deep and is visible everywhere, from the distinctive chicken-shaped bowls sold at roadside stalls to the industrial kilns of Dhanabadee Ceramic Museum. The rooster — Lampang's unofficial mascot — appears on the hand-painted bowls that have been produced here since the early 20th century, and the museum offers hands-on workshops where visitors can paint their own pieces for around 150 THB. Beyond ceramics, the Kad Kong Ta Walking Street comes alive every Saturday and Sunday evening along the Wang River, where vendors sell local crafts, northern sausages, and kanom jeen nam ngiao — rice noodles in a spicy tomato-pork broth that is Lampang's signature dish.
