Koh Samet lies in the Gulf of Thailand off the coast of Rayong province, just about 220 kilometers southeast of Bangkok, making it the closest island with white sand beaches to the capital. This proximity turns Koh Samet into the number one weekend escape for Bangkokians looking to trade the big city for a few days of sea breeze and sand between their toes. The entire island belongs to the Khao Laem Ya - Mu Ko Samet National Park, with a 200 Baht entry fee for foreigners collected on arrival.

The island is compact at 6.5 kilometers long and 3 kilometers wide, but surprisingly hilly. The east coast lines up one beach after another, starting in the north with Sai Kaew Beach, the longest and most popular on the island. The fine white sand that gives the beach its name (Sai Kaew means crystal sand) stretches about 800 meters and offers the full spectrum of beach life: jet skis, banana boats, massage loungers and beachfront restaurants. Heading south, Ao Hin Khok and Ao Phai are slightly quieter, then Ao Cho, the hidden gem with only two resorts, and at the far southern end Ao Wai and Ao Kiu, where the tranquility is near-perfect.

The west coast features Ao Phrao (Coconut Bay), the island's most exclusive beach served by just two luxury resorts and offering the best sunset views. A meal at Le Vimarn Resort on Ao Phrao costs from 200 Baht, moderate by Koh Samet standards. The island has no proper roads, just a hilly concrete track winding north to south. Scooters (300 Baht per day) are the main transport, though the steep inclines demand caution. Songthaews (pickup taxis) connect the pier with Sai Kaew Beach for 50 Baht.
