About Koh Lipe
Koh Lipe sits at the far southern tip of Thailand's Andaman coast, just a few kilometers from the Malaysian border, and belongs to Satun province. The island is part of the Tarutao National Marine Park, one of Thailand's oldest marine protected areas, and is regularly called the Maldives of Thailand, a comparison that holds up when you see the turquoise water and powdery white sand for yourself. At just 2.5 kilometers long and barely a kilometer wide, Koh Lipe is tiny and can be crossed on foot in 30 minutes.
The island has three main beaches that deliver entirely different content depending on time of day and mood. Pattaya Beach on the south side is the most beautiful and popular, with powder-white sand and turquoise water that looks almost fluorescent in sunlight. This is also where speedboats arrive, and beachfront restaurants serve meals with ocean views from 80 Baht. Sunrise Beach on the east coast offers, as the name promises, spectacular sunrises over the islands of Koh Adang and Koh Rawi, which appear as dark silhouettes against the morning color show. Sunset Beach on the west coast is the smallest and quietest beach with the island's best sunsets.
The Walking Street connects Pattaya Beach and Sunrise Beach and is the heart of island life. The narrow lane is lined with restaurants, bars, dive schools, massage parlors and small shops. Despite growing commercialization, the Walking Street retains the charm of a fishing village, especially early in the morning when noodle vendors set up their carts and fishermen bring in their catch. In the evening, bars transform into atmospheric hangouts with live music, fire shows and cocktails from 120 Baht.
