About Khao Sok
Khao Sok National Park sits in Surat Thani Province and protects 739 square kilometers of one of the oldest evergreen rainforests on Earth. Scientists estimate its age at roughly 160 million years, making it older than the Amazon. Limestone formations tower up to 960 meters, cut through by rivers, waterfalls, and the 165-square-kilometer Cheow Lan reservoir. For content creators, Khao Sok ranks among the most visually dramatic locations in all of Southeast Asia.
Cheow Lan Lake is the park's centerpiece and delivers images that rival Halong Bay but without the tourist crowds. Hundreds of limestone karsts pierce the emerald-green water, wrapped in morning mist. Floating rafthouses offer overnight stays directly on the lake, from 1,500 Baht per person including the boat transfer, dinner, and breakfast. The stillness at dawn, when gibbons call from the surrounding jungle and fog drifts slowly across the water, produces content of cinematic quality. Kayak tours on the lake cost from 300 Baht and provide access to hidden caves and secluded coves.
The jungle trails in the park cater to different fitness levels. The Main Trail to Ton Kloi Waterfall is a straightforward 7-kilometer path through dense rainforest, passing lianas, strangler figs, and bamboo groves. National park entry costs 300 Baht for foreigners. Guided night walks (from 500 Baht) reveal an entirely different world: nocturnal creatures like Malay civets, flying foxes, and bioluminescent fungi. More demanding routes like the trail to Sip Et Chan Waterfall (11 tiers) require river crossings and take a full day.
