About Khao Lak

Khao Lak – Overview

Khao Lak sits on the Andaman coast in Phang Nga province, about 80 kilometers north of Phuket, and has established itself as the mellow alternative to its bustling neighbor. The area stretches along several kilometers of coastline and consists of the communities of Bang Niang, Nang Thong and Khao Lak proper, which blend seamlessly into one another. With a residential population of roughly 5,500, Khao Lak retains the character of an easygoing beach town that is fundamentally different from the party scenes of Phuket and Phi Phi.

Khao Lak – Nature & Sightseeing

The beaches of Khao Lak are long, wide and remarkably empty compared to the Andaman destinations further south. Nang Thong Beach, directly in front of the main town, offers golden-brown sand with gentle waves, ideal for families. Bang Niang Beach further north is even quieter, lined by a handful of resorts. White Sand Beach (Hat Khao Lak) inside the national park of the same name is the most natural of the beaches, where rainforest meets sand directly. All beaches provide excellent conditions for sunset content, as the west-facing coast has an unobstructed view of the horizon.

Khao Lak – Local Life

The gateway to the Similan Islands, an archipelago of nine islands roughly 70 kilometers offshore, is the main reason divers and snorkelers come to Khao Lak. The Similans, open from November to May, rank among the world's top ten dive sites with visibility up to 40 meters, manta rays, whale sharks and vibrant coral reefs. A snorkeling day trip costs from 2,200 Baht including the national park fee (500 Baht), while dive liveaboards running two to four days start at 12,000 Baht. The Sailing Rock formation on Similan Island number 8 is the archipelago's signature image and a must for every underwater vlogger.
