About this Place
The Old City of Chiang Mai is the historic walled and moated heart of the Lanna Kingdom, founded by King Mengrai in 1296. Enclosed within a near-perfect square of brick walls and a wide moat, this roughly 1.5 km by 1.5 km area packs in an extraordinary density of history, culture, and daily life. Over 30 Buddhist temples stand within walking distance of each other — more than anywhere else in northern Thailand — making it a genuine open-air museum of Lanna religious architecture. Tha Phae Gate on the eastern wall is the neighbourhood's most recognisable landmark and the starting point for most visitors. From here, narrow sois fan out past centuries-old wats including Wat Chedi Luang (housing a partial Buddha relic), Wat Phra Singh (home to the revered Phra Singh Buddha image), and dozens of smaller temples where monks in saffron robes go about their daily routines. The Sunday Walking Street transforms Wualai Road (just south of the old city) into a kilometre-long handicraft and street food market every Sunday from 16:00; the Saturday Night Market takes over nearby. The Old City contrasts sharply with the trendier Nimman district to the west: here the vibe is guesthouses, vegetarian cafes, yoga studios, and slow travel. Exploring by rented bicycle — available throughout the old city for around 70 THB per day — is the best way to discover hidden temples and local coffee shops at your own pace.
