Nong Khai Mekong Riverfront
Isaan's most charismatic Mekong river town — sunset views to Laos, bizarre Buddhist sculpture parks, and easy border crossing to Vientiane.

About this Place
Nong Khai on the Mekong River, sitting directly opposite Vientiane, Laos, is one of Northeast Thailand's most beloved destinations — a languid riverside town of colonial-era shophouses, outstanding food, and some of the most spectacular Mekong sunset views in the entire region. The Tha Sadej riverfront market operates evenings with fresh produce, Isaan street food, and Lao goods traded across the river. The famous Sala Keoku sculpture park (8km east) is Nong Khai's wildest attraction: acres of bizarre Buddhist and Hindu cement sculptures built by the visionary mystic Luang Pu Bunleua Sulilat. The Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge provides easy border crossing to Vientiane (15 minutes by bus). Traditional river ferry crossings offer a slower, more atmospheric alternative. The early morning fish market at the main pier draws commercial fishermen and wholesale buyers in extraordinary volume. Nong Khai's guesthouse and independent cafe scene has evolved into one of Isaan's most charming overnight bases for travellers, with a distinctly laid-back character.
