About Koh Yao

Koh Yao – Overview

Koh Yao, made up of the twin islands Koh Yao Noi (the smaller, more touristed one) and Koh Yao Yai (the larger, quieter one), sits in the middle of Phang Nga Bay between Phuket and Krabi. This strategic location is simultaneously the islands' greatest asset and best-kept secret: while neighbors Phuket and Krabi draw millions of tourists, the Koh Yao islands with their roughly 8,000 predominantly Muslim residents maintain a calm and authenticity that recalls the Thailand before mass tourism.

Koh Yao – Nature & Sightseeing

Koh Yao Noi is the more popular of the two, though popular is relative: even in peak season, many beaches see barely any other tourists. The island measures about 12 kilometers in length and is easily explored by scooter (200 Baht per day). The east side offers views of the dramatic limestone formations of Phang Nga Bay, while the west side delivers sunsets over Phuket. Tha Khao Beach on the northeast side is the main beach with a long, flat sand strip that is ideal at low tide. Laem Had, a sandbar at the northernmost point, emerges at low tide as a perfect peninsula in turquoise water and delivers spectacular drone footage.

Koh Yao – Local Life

Koh Yao Yai, roughly twice the size of Noi, is even less developed and offers an almost meditative stillness. Rice paddies, rubber plantations and traditional fishing villages define the landscape. Loh Jark Beach on the west coast is a long, nearly deserted sandy beach fringed by casuarina trees. The island has only a handful of accommodations, mostly homestays and small resorts, which preserves its authentic character. A scooter tour around the entire island takes about two hours and passes through fishing villages, past mosques and through mangrove forests.
