Exploring Thailand on two wheels is one of the most liberating and immersive ways to experience the Kingdom, opening up hidden corners of the country that no bus route or train line can reach. From the legendary Mae Hong Son Loop winding through the mountains of the north to the coastal roads hugging the Andaman Sea and the endless rice paddies of the Isan plateau, Thailand offers a road network that attracts motorcycle enthusiasts from around the world and produces some of the most visually stunning content on YouTube.
The Mae Hong Son Loop is Thailand's crown jewel for motorcycle touring, covering approximately 600 kilometers from Chiang Mai through the mountains of northern Thailand via Pai, Mae Hong Son, and Mae Chaem before looping back to Chiang Mai. The route encompasses over 4,600 curves, passes through hill tribe villages of the Karen and Hmong peoples, hot springs, waterfalls, and some of the most spectacular viewpoints in the country. Most riders plan three to five days for the complete loop, with Pai serving as a popular midway stop thanks to its relaxed atmosphere and natural hot springs. The roads are well-paved throughout, but the combination of tight switchbacks, steep climbs, and occasional fog during the cool season demands experience and caution.
Scooter and motorcycle rental in Thailand is straightforward and affordable. A Honda Click or Yamaha NMAX 155cc rents for 200 to 300 Baht per day, with long-term rates starting at 3,000 Baht monthly. Larger machines like the Honda CB500X or Kawasaki Versys 650 are available from 800 Baht daily at specialized rental shops such as Big Bike Chiang Mai or Phuket Moto Rent. Most rental companies require a passport copy as security, and some ask for a deposit of 2,000 to 5,000 Baht. An international driving permit is officially required, and obtaining a Thai driving license is the safest option for long-term riders. The license is available at the Department of Land Transport for 505 Baht after completing a vision test, reaction test, and practical exam.
